About Me

My name is Trish Haveman, and as of January 3, 2010, I am a vegan.
I’m married to my wonderful husband, Tyrel (but I just call him Ty), who is a software engineer at Attachmate Corp. He has been amazingly supportive in my transition to veganism and while he has no interest in becoming vegan himself, he even helps me cook and try out funky recipes from my cookbooks and online. I’m hoping to develop a good catalog of recipes and meals that I can put together for both of us to eat. This may be difficult, as he’s a picky eater and isn’t big on veggies, but we’ll figure things out.
My goal is to be a healthy vegan, not a “junk food” vegan. If I’m going to do this, I’m going to do it right. I’m focusing on using fresh, local, and organic ingredients when possible, and as little from a package as is realistic. (There are some instances where you really can’t help it, and I’m not a total idealist.)
There’s one thing I’d like to make clear about my becoming a vegan: this isn’t a diet. It’s a diet in the non-American sense of the word, “The usual food and drink of a person or animal.” But I’m not “on a diet.” To that end, there aren’t technically any foods I can’t eat. There are foods I choose not to eat. To me, that’s an important distinction. I’m in no way restricted in what I eat, and to be perfectly honest, I completely enjoy this lifestyle. So please don’t feel pity for me because I “can’t” eat meat, dairy, or eggs. I really don’t miss it!
